Colds and Flu 2019; coming soon :) Flu season is here and regardless of the plethora of over-the-counter remedies available, the best medicine really is to ride it out with plenty of rest and lots of fluids. Choosing the right foods and drinks are crucial at this time to help you feel better and most importantly, stay that way!
Orange juice is chock-full of vitamin C and is a great way to build up your immune system and (hopefully) keep it up. Store-bought however can also be full of sugar and other artificial ingredients. Squeeze your own when you are well or be sure to buy 100% juice and check for any unwanted ingredients.
Taking comfort in hot drinks is another great way to feel better. For sore throats, an easy home remedy is hot water with fresh squeezed lemon juice and honey. This coats your throat and will calm your cough without the added who–knows–what of over the counter cough syrup.
Drinking lots of tea will help you stay hydrated, with some added benefits. Peppermint teas will help refresh dry mouths, chamomile can calm an upset stomach as well as easing you into the sleep you need. When you do start to feel better, keep green tea in regular circulation, as it is full of antioxidants and can help keep you well.
Broth is another great way to bring in a bit of substance without requiring too much effort. A cup of vegetable or chicken broth can provide the nutrients and hydration you need and best of all can be enjoyed from the comfort of bed.
When you feel ready to venture into solid foods, keep it simple and easy to digest. Soups are a great start be it classic chicken noodle or a pureed vegetable. Oatmeal is another go-to as it is filling, nutritious and easy on your stomach. Greek yogurt can also be a great way to bring in some flavor and protein without being too hard on your system.
The healthier you are, the healthier you’ll stay, so keep a healthy diet in mind even when you’re not feeling under the weather.
